Applications for admission to graduate study are accepted once a year and must specify the department of choice. Normally, a student accepted by Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is expected to have met requirements for a bachelor's degree in engineering or science. It is not necessary that the degree be in aeronautical or mechanical engineering. Qualified and interested students with degrees in mathematics, materials, physics, chemical, civil, or electrical engineering are also encouraged to apply.
The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department's graduate programs are not step programs, therefore students are not required to receive an internal or external M.S.E. prior to obtaining a Ph.D. from the department. Applicants interested in pursuing a Ph.D. but who feel that an additional year of training would be beneficial before starting the regular Ph.D. program should indicate an interest in the Pre-Doctoral Fellowship Initiative on the application. Additional information about the Pre-Doctoral Fellowship Initiative is provided by Princeton's Graduate School.
The application for Fall 2025 admission will be available in September. The deadline for applying is December 1, 2024. Note that GRE scores are not being accepted as part of our graduate application for Fall 2025. Matriculation dates other than September are not permitted. We have no evening, weekend or summer classes. We do not accept transfer students from other graduate programs. The Graduate School will not admit applicants who seek to earn a second Ph.D. in the same or a closely related field. Applicants may apply to only one academic department or program in any given admission year.
