Numerical simulations and theoretical analysis reveal details of melting, buckling, and collapse transitions of viral capsids due to thermal fluctuations. Capsids of larger viruses are found to be more unstable, which explains why such viruses employ scaffolds during the assembly of their capsids, which then undergo a post-assembly maturation process to increase stability.
