The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell is seeking to hire several full-time tenure-track faculty at the ranks of Assistant or Associate Professor; applications for Full Professor will also be considered for exceptional candidates.  The Department is expanding and also starting new Industrial Engineering undergraduate and graduate programs.  Applicants must have earned Doctoral degrees in mechanical/industrial engineering, or closely related disciplines, and are required to have a record of quality teaching and scholarship. Successful applicants will collaborate with existing faculty members, teach classes to support the undergraduate and graduate programs, develop new courses, advise and recruit graduate students, and are expected to develop a robust, externally funded research program in one of the following areas: (1) Robotics and Autonomous Systems: (a) perception, planning, and optimization; (b) soft robotics, compliant robotics, and manipulation; or (c) unmanned aerial and ground systems. The vision of the UML Robotics Initiative is to create an integrated, connected, self-sustaining research and education enterprise directed towards human-centered robotics to address societal challenges. Faculty will have the opportunity to work with the NERVE Center, a 10,000 sq. ft. robot testing facility, as well as the newly designed 5,000 sq. ft. UMass Lowell Robotics lab.  (2) Mechanics & Materials: Stochastic and statistical analysis and design, e.g., defects and failure analysis and estimation; design of structures, materials, or machines; design for manufacturing, e.g., as related to automated manufacturing or additive manufacturing; manufacturing process modeling and design, particularly as it relates to composites or automated manufacturing processes; data-driven design and manufacturing; or fluid-structure interaction. (3) Thermal-Fluid & Energy Systems: (a) integrated solar-thermal energy systems, e.g. thermo-photovoltaic devices, solar thermochemical conversion, concentrated solar power, radiative thermal management; (b) advanced diagnostics of reacting and multiphase systems, e.g. Thomson/Raman/Rayleigh scattering, induced fluorescence; (c) atmospheric pressure plasmas, e.g. plasma-liquid interactions, plasma-biomaterial systems, plasma catalysis; (d) energy resiliency. (4) Industrial Engineering: (a) Health care delivery systems (b) Advanced manufacturing, includes topics relating to automation, robotic manipulation and material handling; (c) Theoretical and methodological analytics in support of manufacturing, logistics, and business decisions.    Note: Candidates must clearly specify a single research area (of the four listed) in bold font in the first sentence of their Cover Letter.
