Humboldt State University and the Department of Environmental Resources Engineering (ERE) invite applicants for an academic year tenure-track faculty position in Environmental Engineering.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: An earned Ph.D. or equivalent in Environmental Engineering or related field from an accredited college or university is strongly preferred at the time of appointment. Applicants with considerable progress towards terminal degree completion by appointment date will be considered. Completion of terminal degree is required prior to the start of the second probationary year following initial appointment.
The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:
- Expertise in areas of Environmental Engineering, Renewable Energy and/or Engineering Education;
- Commitment to and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds;
- Interest and potential to advise and mentor students from minoritized groups in higher education;
- Commitment to participating in professional development opportunities that build effectiveness in areas of inclusion, intercultural communication, and advancing diversity;
- Record of, or potential for, involving students in research and scholarly activity;
- Potential for effective teaching or teaching experience using a variety of methodologies;
- Interest and ability to teach a broad range of courses; and
- Willingness to participate in the development of online learning experiences.
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
- Expertise and/or interest in teaching computational methods/data science, groundwater, engineering mechanics, capstone design, and/or material science; and
- Registration as a professional engineer.

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES: Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence and to building a strong research record. Responsibilities include teaching for the Environmental Resources Engineering Department, and instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students. The courses assigned to the candidate will include engineering classes in the candidate’s area of expertise. Courses assigned will also include other departmental courses in basic engineering science (e.g., Statics, Dynamics, Strength of Materials & Materials Science, Introduction to Environmental Resources Engineering, Introduction to Design, Environmental Data Monitoring & Analysis, etc.). Candidates should be interested in undergraduate and graduate research programs and in securing external funding for research. Candidates have an opportunity to collaborate with experts in echohydraulics, advanced water treatment systems, air quality, renewable energy, and decentralized electricity systems. Opportunities exist for participating in two options of the Environmental Systems Graduate Program: Environmental Resources Engineering (ERE) and Energy Technology and Policy (ETaP). The Environmental Resources Engineering department has direct faculty and student links to the Schatz Energy Research Center, the Campus Center for Appropriate Technology, and the internationally-acclaimed Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary. Opportunities exist to collaborate with and/or conduct research through these entities. A typical teaching load is three courses per semester for the Environmental Resources Engineering department.
The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship, and creative activity; and service to the University, professional and to the community. These responsibilities include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions. Probationary faculty are typically provided ongoing mentorship to be a successful member of the faculty. During the first two years of the probationary period, teaching responsibilities will be reduced by approximately one course each semester. The reduced teaching load supports the establishment of research, scholarship and/or creative activities required for retention, tenure, and promotion.

GENERAL INFORMATION: The Environmental Resources Engineering (ERE) program is ABET accredited. It is one of the largest, oldest, and most respected undergraduate ERE programs in the country. The mission of the ERE program is to prepare engineers to solve complex environmental resources problems. The program strives to educate leaders who will sustain, restore, and protect our natural resources and the environment. The program emphasizes hands-on learning environment; ERE students engage in frequent labs, field trips, and team projects, while enjoying a cooperative learning environment in classes that range from 12-72 students. The department, as part of a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), values diversity, equity, inclusion and access. Currently, of the tenured and tenure-track faculty: 75% are female, 63% are untenured, and 25% identify as Latinx. ERE students self-identify as: 33% underrepresented minority, 34% female, 43% first in family to attend university, and 45% are Pell Grant eligible. Humboldt State University sits on the traditional homelands of the Wiyot people in what is currently called Arcata, CA. The Wiyot people call the area Goudi’ni (over in the woods). The Humboldt State University campus in Northern California is in close proximity to several thriving Native American tribes and communities. Humboldt State currently has the largest percentage of Native American students in the CSU system and has over 30 Native American faculty and staff many from local area California Indian tribes. HSU is home to a number of leading Native American programs including the Indian Tribal Education and Personnel Program (ITEPP) and the Indian Natural Resource, Science and Engineering Program (INRSEP). There are also many opportunities at HSU to conduct research, teaching and community work on Native American history and cultures in Special Collections at the HSU library.
