Job Summary
The School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate level. Purdue University seeks to attract exceptional candidates with interests and expertise in design and fabrication for emergent convergent areas such as intersection of physical sciences with internet-of-things, energy, machine learning and data sciences, sensor design, biological-physical systems. Applications areas may involve but are not restricted to manufacturing automation, design of systems to support the aging population, and wearables.  In conjunction with the aforementioned focus candidate interests are expected to provide a highly synergistic framework to augment the school’s and college of engineering’s progress in the digital-physical interfaces towards convergent research and innovation opportunities. For example, convergent research could include applications at the intersection of design and manufacturing (making of things) and connectivity (internet of things, sensors). Successful candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree in Engineering or a related discipline and demonstrate excellent potential to build an independent research program at the forefront of their field, as well as potential to educate and mentor students. The successful candidate will conduct original research, advise graduate students, teach undergraduate and graduate level courses, and perform service both at the School and University levels.
School and College
Established in 1882, the School of Mechanical Engineering is the oldest of Purdue’s engineering schools and has granted over 28,000 degrees.  The School has become synonymous with innovation and outstanding accomplishment in engineering research, education, and global engagement.  In addition to supporting faculty expansion, the School’s fundraising has enabled the newly-opened, LEED-certified, $34.5M Roger B. Gatewood Wing of Mechanical Engineering with substantial space dedicated to design research and education; the $30M LEED-certified expansion of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories; a $8.2M expansion of High-Pressure facilities at the Maurice J. Zucrow Laboratories; and numerous endowed scholarships and fellowships.  Its annual research expenditures and endowment/trust funds have grown rapidly to $24M per year and over $80M, respectively. The School of Mechanical Engineering is home of Herrick, Zucrow and Maha research laboratories with significant infrastructure and a long tradition of collaboration with industry and national laboratories.
